| Cal-HOSA
is the premier leadership and training organization for students preparing for
careers in the health care profession. HOSA is a national student organization
endorsed by the U.S. and California Departments of Education and the Association
for Career and Technical Education. THE
MISSION: Promote career opportunities in health care and enhance the delivery
of compassionate, quality health care to help students meet the needs of the health
care community. THE
GOAL: Serve as a major pipeline of talented and dedicated health care professionals
in the future. THE
PROGRAM: Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is a national organization
which supplements and compliments the health occupations education curriculum.
HOSA provides students – in secondary, postsecondary and collegiate
programs – with opportunities to develop personal, leadership, and careers skills
needed by healthcare providers. HOSA currently has nearly 68,000 actives members
in over 2,100 chapters in 37 states plus Puerto Rico and Guam. In California,
there are about 2,500 HOSA members in nearly 50 schools throughout the state.
HOSA is most effective when integrated into the health occupations classroom in
such a manner that it is difficult to differentiate between classroom and chapter
activities. HOSA helps develop the total person, not just job-specific skills.
The rapidly changing health care system needs workers who are technically skilled,
people-oriented and capable of accepting leadership as a member of a team.
HOSA provides several unique tools to develop a highly-skilled, team oriented
health care professional. HOSA Competitive Events Program in the classroom
is an exciting motivational tool to encourage students to enter and experience
different aspects of the health care profession. Students appreciate the opportunities
for recognition at the region, state, and national competition. Advisors use the
event guidelines and rating sheets as teaching tools and as a means of inspiring
and encouraging students to achieve maximum performance. HOSA chapter, region,
state, and national leadership events add training in professionalism, management,
communication, goal setting, and personal effectiveness that transform academic
pursuits into a passion for life, career, and service. |
